Almost unremittingly dark, its bleakness is only tempered, if at all, by occasional bursts of hodfmann humour. Coppelius was a German, but I think no honest one. In a letter to his friend Lothario, Nathaniel tells of a recent meeting with a barometer salesman, called Coppola, that has upset him. His indignation at Clara’s cold, prosaic disposition constantly increased; and Clara could not overcome her dislike of Nathaniel’s dark, gloomy, boring mysticism, so that they became mentally more and more estranged without either of them perceiving it.
Nathanael’s frustration with this leads him to call her an “inanimate, accursed automaton”, which so enrages Lothar that he in turn insults Nathanael, and a duel is only narrowly averted by Clara’s intervention. The Sandman is one of the three tales to figure in Jacques Offenbach great opera and presents in a very forceful fashion several of the great themes that dominate Hoffman’s work.
